ACHS Principal Dr. John Ringstaff

Dear ACHS Family,

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! This will be an exciting school year full of opportunities to grow for everyone. While challenges exist in adapting to virtual or hybrid delivery of instruction, I am proud to share that a caring, dedicated, and supportive staff at ACHS is prepared to help meet any challenge.

Our theme for this school year is Raiders RISE. The inspiration for this theme came after identifying core values and common expectations that all ACHS Raiders should exhibit in any school setting. RISE signifies that Raiders are RESPECTFUL, INVOLVED, SAFE, and EXCEPTIONAL!

Despite an abbreviated previous school year, ACHS has plenty to celebrate and build upon. This includes achieving full accreditation, decreasing chronic absenteeism rate, and increasing on-time graduation (OTG) rate. ACHS was recognized by the Virginia Department of Education for gains made in reducing student absences over the previous three years and by the Virginia School Board Association for meeting the needs of all learners during the forced school closure in March for COVID-19.

For a principal, the level of community engagement and involvement in our schools makes me very proud. I encourage all parents to make sure contact information is up to date at each school -- this year more than ever! We will engage with families and students through all means possible. This may mean greater reliance on phone calls and emails to our stakeholders. I want to make sure we can reach everyone and that every child is supported!

For those students who selected the hybrid option, we have updated our bell schedule to build an advisory period in the middle of the day for lunch and time with their homeroom teacher. This time will allow for activities such as clubs, tutoring, and school-wide programming in an effort to increase student connection to school.

Please note these important dates for ACHS:

  • Our dual enrollment information session will take place Thursday, August 13th at 6:00pm. A link to the virtual event will be posted on the ACHS website. We will make our auditorium available for those that wish to attend in person. The meeting also includes information for all dual enrollment students enrolled in classes taking place at ACHS or at JTCC. Social distancing and mitigation practices will be observed.
  • Ninth grade orientation will be held online through a Google Meet beginning at 5:30pm on Thursday, August 6th. Please check the ACHS website for a link to this event.
  • The ACHS Open House will be held online through a Google Meet on August 10th between 2:00pm - 7:00pm. Videos from staff members will be available. Please check the ACHS website for a link to this event.
  • During the week of August 10th-August 14th between 8:00am-430pm families can complete necessary forms at the school board office. A voucher received there will allow families to pick up a chromebook, flash drive, and schedule at ACHS from their homeroom teacher. ACHS will run extended hours of 8:00am-7:00pm on Tuesday, August 11th and Thursday, August 13th. This is the best time to make sure contact information is correct on file at the school. Social distancing and mitigation practices will be observed.

Sincerely,

John Ringstaff
