Career Studies Certificate program in Early Childhood through JTCC

Sophomores and Juniors: We will be offering a Career Studies Certificate program in Early Childhood through John Tyler Community College next year.  Students will attend JTCC in the morning and return to ACHS at 4th period each day.  This program will enable students to find employment in settings such as preschools, child care centers and homes etc.  Students must have a 3.0 GPA to apply and must take a placement test.  Please see your counselor immediately if interested as we are limited to five students.

On Friday, November 13th, the ACHS School Counseling Department accompanied a group of 23 students to the Midlothian campus of John Tyler Community College. This field trip is a culminating activity for students enrolled in SDV 100 College Success Skills (pictured below), a dual-enrollment class taught by Mrs. Ferrara. SDV 100 focuses on topics and skills that serve to increase positive outcomes for students early in their college career. During the field trip, students attended a presentation highlighting the benefits of attending JTCC, were given a tour of the campus, and were shown how to utilize the JTCC library on-line for research purposes. As Dual Enrollment enrollees, ACHS students enjoy the perks of being a JTCC co-ed both virtually and on-campus.

Three students were awarded $500 scholarships during our College Nights program on November 12th! Congratulations Taylor Rather, Katherine Edens, and Shaquia Akers!

On Thursday, October 8th, Mrs. Ferrara and Ms. Garrett took a group of 21 students to visit James Madison University. The group, consisting of juniors and seniors, were given a presentation by representatives of the Office of Admissions. Topics discussed included admissions criteria specific to JMU, financial aid opportunities, and student life. The presentation was followed by a JMU Student Ambassador led two-hour tour. Students were able to see the dorms, numerous academic buildings, and Bridgeforth Stadium, home to the Bulldogs. Before eating lunch in D-Hall, students were given a tour of the campus’s brand new, 250,000 square-foot Student Success Center. The School Counseling Department is hoping to offer 9th and 10th graders the opportunity to visit a college campus in spring 2016.
