Dear ACHS Family,

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year!

Our theme for this school year is Every Raider, Every Day! Every Raider matters and every Raider should be supported fully so they can achieve success. We are keeping our positive behavior expectations of RISE in place. In all settings, we expect Raiders to be RESPECTFUL, INVOLVED, SAFE, and EXCEPTIONAL!

We are excited to welcome Mrs. Katie Jamrozy-Hamby back to ACHS as our new assistant principal. Mrs. Jamrozy-Hamby taught English for six years in Amelia County Public Schools and spent one year as an instructional technology innovation specialist for Prince Edward County Public Schools. She is currently attending Virginia Commonwealth University in pursuit of her doctoral degree in educational leadership.

I want to take this opportunity to ask all Raider families to realize how critically important student  attendance is for success in school. I am also asking for a strategic partnership between our Raider families and our Raider staff. As a school, our staff must foster engaging instruction and activities for our students. We must also address chronic absenteeism with a focus on positive incentives rather than punitive consequences. Timely and frequent two-way communication between home and school are also essential. Raider families, please encourage attendance and when an absence cannot be avoided, we ask that you communicate with us quickly or provide documentation so that we can code the absence correctly.

I encourage all Raiders to get involved in a club, sport, co-curricular activity, or extra-curricular activity. These connections to school build resiliency factors that are critical for success. We have a variety of career and technical education opportunities for those students wishing to “get their hands dirty” with their learning. These opportunities are available in-house, at the Amelia-Nottoway Technical Center, and through our partnerships with both John Tyler Community College (now Brightpoint Community College) and Southside Virginia Community College. We are also offering two new academic classes: Advanced Placement (AP) Government and Biology II: Anatomy & Physiology.

There is an important vaccine requirement for students entering the 12th grade. Effective July 1, 2021, a minimum of two doses of Meningococcal Conjugate (MenACWY) Vaccine are required. The first dose should be administered prior to entering 7th grade. The final dose should be administered prior to entering 12th grade.

The positive school climate and culture at ACHS is not possible without all of us working together. Thank you for all you do to help make ACHS and our Raiders successful! Please feel free to contact me or Mrs. Katie Jamrozy-Hamby, if you have any questions or concerns throughout the year.

I wish everyone a successful school year!

Sincerely,
Dr. John Ringstaff
