Effective January 1, 2023, all public school divisions are required to ensure parental notification, identify the specific instructional material and sexually explicit subjects, and permit the parent
of any student to review instructional material that includes sexually explicit content and provide, as an alternative, non explicit instructional material and related academic activities to any student whose parent so requests.
Parents have the right to review such instructional materials in advance and have the right to have their child use, upon written or verbal request, in a non-punitive manner, alternative instructional materials that do not include sexually explicit content.” Parents may contact their child’s teacher either verbally or in writing regarding such requests. It is the responsibility of the teacher to inform the school principal in a timely manner of any and all parental requests and to ensure that the child receives appropriate alternative instructional materials that do not include sexually explicit content.
Parents may contact their child’s teacher either through email or written note at any time regarding their right to change their decision with respect to the use of alternative instructional materials. It is the responsibility of the teacher to inform the school principal in a timely manner of any and all parental requests and to ensure that the child receives the same instructional materials being presented to all students.
